Mission
Adisthan exists to make every sacred place — temple, mosque, church, gurdwara, synagogue, ashram, shrine, monastery, jinja, fire temple, sacred natural site — findable, accurately and reverently, by anyone who is looking.
We catalogue. We connect. We pass through. We do not own the places, we do not speak for the traditions, and we do not stand between the seeker and the sacred. We simply make the door visible.
Vision
A world in which every sacred place — however small, however remote, however minoritised — is known to those who would seek it; in which custodians have a dignified, free way to share their work; in which seekers can find practice, service, study, and generosity wherever they are. A directory in the older sense of the word: kept by hand, given as a gift.
The four pathways — a doctrinal commitment
Adisthan is built around four pathways of engagement with sacred places: Seva, Sādhana, Sandhāna, Sādhya. We commit, as a matter of design, that every place on the directory will be offered as a site of all four pathways. This commitment is not aesthetic; it is doctrinal.
The framing is Sanskrit. The reality is universal. Every living tradition contains its own version of service, of practice, of wisdom, of giving. To frame them all through the same four pathways is to assert that sacred places, despite their differences, do something deeply similar to one another — they hold the seeker open to four shapes of meaningful relation with the world.

- Offer time, presence, or skill to a sacred place or community.
- Sādhana — Practice
- Take up a practice — meditation, mantra, study — guided by a tradition.
- Sandhāna — Wisdom
- Read teachings, scripture, and commentary held by sacred places.
- Sādhya — Giving
- Give to upkeep, custodians, communities, and ongoing work.
Contested and politically sensitive sites
Some sacred places are the object of ongoing political dispute. Some are co-claimed by multiple traditions. Some are situated within active conflict zones. Adisthan's policy on these is transparent:
- We list sites by their long-attested sacred function, not by current political authority over them.
- Where multiple traditions claim a site, we acknowledge each, in neutral language, with reference to scholarly consensus.
- We do not editorialise on political claims. The directory is not a tribunal.
- Where a site cannot be safely visited, we say so plainly and link to safety guidance from neutral authorities.
- We accept correction from any party. Disputed edits are escalated to a transparent review process.
Privacy and data
We collect the minimum data needed to operate the directory. We do not sell user data. We do not run advertising. Saved places, inquiries, and account preferences are private to the user. Custodian-only data is never exposed to the public site.
We do not require an account to browse. We do not track you across the web.
Free, forever
Adisthan is free to use, free to claim, free to contribute to. There is no premium tier. There is no future paywall planned. The directory is sustained by donations. If Adisthan one day fails to be free, Adisthan will simply cease.
