This ground was once called Kanchanagiri, set between the Cauvery and Vrishabhavati rivers, remembered as the home of the sage Atri and his wife Anusuya, with Abiru Bhairava as its ruling guardian, honoured as Jaya Peetha.
The story the ground remembers
The old telling begins with grief. When Sati, The First Consort Of Shiva, Gave Up Her Body in the fire of Her father's insult, Shiva carried Her across the worlds in a sorrow that would not end, until Vishnu loosed his discus and the Body Of The Goddess Fell to earth in Fifty-One pieces. Wherever a piece touched the soil, a Shakti Peetha was born; here, the Tantra Chudamani says, Fell Her Ear, the karnabhaga.
Long before the city reached it, this ground was known as Kanchanagiri, lying between the Cauvery and Vrishabhavati rivers. Tradition remembers the sage Atri living here with Anusuya, his wife celebrated for her devotion, and holds that Atri won siddhi through his worship Of Maa Rajarajeshwari. The site's ruling Bhairava, Abiru Bhairava, is honoured under the name Jaya Peetha, and the precincts are held sacred as a gathering place of devas, rishis, munis and siddhas.

The temple is believed to stand where the sage Atri and the pious Anusuya once made their home. Atri, tradition says, attained siddhi here by pleasing Maa Rajarajeshwari, and seekers have honoured the ground ever since.

In 2024 the composer Mahesh Mahadev dedicated a new raga, Sri Jnanakshija, To the temple's presiding Goddess. It was recorded on the album Jnanakshi Rajarajeshwari, with vocal performances by Priyadarshini, Mahesh Mahadev and others.

From Kenchenahalli to Rajarajeshwarinagar
After the temple rose in 1978, Sivaratnapuri Swamiji established the Sri Kailash Ashrama Mahasamsthana at Kenchenahalli. In time the whole locality came to be known as Rajarajeshwarinagar, so that the city quarter itself now carries the Name Of The Goddess. Every address here, in its quiet way, points back To Her.
