You leave Bolpur behind and follow the road toward Labhpur, nine kilometres of open Bengal country, until the Kopai River slides into view. On its bank sits a small temple town that carries The Goddess in its very name. Here, the old telling goes, the Waist Of Maa Sati Fell to earth, and the ground has never forgotten.

The story the river remembers
The Peethas begin with grief. When Sati, insulted at Her father Daksha's great sacrifice, gave up Her body in its fire, Shiva lifted Her corpse and wandered the world, unable to set Her down. As he roamed, Her Body came apart piece by piece, Fifty-One pieces For the fifty-one letters of Sanskrit, and wherever a piece touched the earth, a Shakti Peetha was born.
Upon this riverside ground Fell Her Waist, kankal in Bengali, and some tellings hold that Her bones rest here too. So The Goddess of this place Is Called Maa Devgarbha, and Ruru, Her Bhairava, keeps watch beside Her. The town grew around Her, temple by temple, on the bank of the Kopai.
