Four poojas daily Elephant pooja · 5 am Maasi Pooram · Feb to Mar Gayatri Mandapa · 24 pillars Worshipped in Five Forms
Dawn in Kanchipuram begins with an elephant. At 5 am the temple's own elephants raise their trunks and trumpet the first pooja, and the old city turns toward its Mother. You walk in past walls said to hold the four Vedas, and there She Is, Seated in Lotus at the very center: Maa Kamakshi, Who Reigns here alone.
One sanctum, Five Forms. Maa Is Worshipped here as Para Bhattarika Enthroned at the heart of the shrine, with Tapa, Anjana, Swarna and Utsava Kamakshi Gathered around Her.
A Peetha Of Her own Body: the Navel Of Sati fell Upon this ground, naming it Nabhi Peetham, one of the Eighteen most visited among the Fifty-One.
There is no shrine for Shiva here, For Maa Is Held more powerful than he. Tradition says he himself worshipped Her in four yugas, in four different forms.
The story the city still tells
The old account begins with the Daksha yajna and the self-offering of Sati, The First Wife Of Shiva. Her Body fell to earth in Fifty-One pieces, one For each letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, and where each piece landed a Shakta Peetha arose. Her Navel Came To rest at Kanchipuram, and so this ground is called Nabhi Peetham, The Seat Of The Navel, known also as Odhyana Peetham.
The scriptures add a second telling. Tormented by the demon Bhandasura, the gods became parrots and perched in penance on the champaka trees of this temple, for a parrot always rests on the right hand Of The Goddess. Pleased, She Appeared through the Bila gate and Slew Bhandasura, and Brahma presented Her to the world by the Name Kamakshi.
