About
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary is a Roman Catholic title carried by a small group of historic cathedral churches dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, set in different corners of the Catholic world.
Among the best known bearers of this name are the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Oradea, Romania, the Marian cathedral of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Oradea; the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Panama City, Panama, on the historic Plaza Mayor of Casco Viejo; the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Ayacucho, Peru; and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Trujillo, Peru.
Each of these churches serves as the mother church of its diocese and stands within the long tradition of Marian dedications that has shaped Catholic cathedral building from the medieval period to the modern era. The shared title reflects the central place of devotion to Mary in the universal Catholic Church.
History
Empress Maria Theresa brought the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Ricca to design the basilica from 1752; after his death, Franz Anton Hillebrandt of Vienna completed the building and added its Austrian Baroque ornament. Bishop Count Ladislau Kollonitz consecrated the finished church on 25 June 1780, the day he took possession of the Oradea see. Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of basilica minor in 1991. Together with the adjoining Bishop's Palace and the canons' residences, it forms the largest Baroque ensemble standing in Romania.
Significance
The dome carries Johann Schopf's 1778 fresco of the heavenly triumph of Christ, and the main altar's Carrara marble was carved by the Italian sculptor Triscornia in 1897. A reliquary bust holding relics of Saint Ladislaus, the crusading Hungarian king remembered to have first endowed a church on this site in 1083, rests within the basilica. The organ above the nave, built in 1780 by Fridolin Festl as a gift from Empress Maria Theresa, still sounds at the cathedral's own organ festival.
