History
The nineteenth-century neoclassical cathedral that once stood on this site was so badly shaken by the 1939 Chillán earthquake that its towers had to be brought down and the building demolished. Construction of the present cathedral began on 3 November 1940 to designs by the architects Ramón Venegas, Carlos Casanueva Baluca, and Fernando Urrejola Arrau, and the church opened for worship on 11 July 1964. Chile's earthquakes have shaped the site's history as much as its congregation has, each rebuilding a renewed act of perseverance at the centre of the city's civic and religious life.
Significance
The cathedral holds the cathedra of the Archbishop of Concepción and anchors Marian devotion across central-southern Chile under the title of the Immaculate Conception. Its three-naved basilical interior rises to twenty-seven metres at the crown of the nave, lit by stained glass depicting the saints and closed by doors carved with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The cathedral shares its patronal dedication with the neighbouring Catholic University of the Most Holy Conception, part of the same archdiocesan family.
