The Cathedral of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, also called the Xujiahui Cathedral or sometimes the Xujiahui Catholic Church, stands in the historic Xujiahui district of Shanghai. It is the Latin Church cathedral of the Catholic diocese of Shanghai and one of the most prominent Christian sanctuaries in the country.
The cathedral takes its dedication from Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the sixteenth-century Basque founder of the Society of Jesus, whose missionaries played a formative role in the Christian history of China. Set within the Xujiahui neighbourhood, which itself grew up around the activities of Jesuit scholars, scientists, and pastors over the centuries, the building anchors a long story of dialogue between Catholic Christianity and the cultures of the Chinese world.
For the Catholic faithful of Shanghai and the wider region, the cathedral serves as the home church of the diocese and the centre of episcopal liturgy. It continues to receive worshippers and visitors today as a sign of the long, complex, and quietly persistent Catholic presence in modern China.
