About
St. Michael's Cathedral rises within the fortified citadel of Alba Iulia in the heart of Transylvania, Romania, and serves as the cathedra of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia. Dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, prince of the heavenly host and protector of the people of God, it is one of the oldest Catholic sanctuaries of the wider Carpathian region.
Construction began in the thirteenth century, on the site of earlier Christian foundations reaching back to the era when this city was the Roman colony of Apulum. The cathedral combines Romanesque foundations with Gothic elevations, completed through long campaigns of building that continued into the late medieval centuries despite damage from Tatar incursions.
Within the walls rest a number of figures central to Hungarian and Transylvanian history, including the celebrated voivode John Hunyadi, victor over the Ottomans at the siege of Belgrade in 1456, together with members of the Hunyadi family. Their carved sarcophagi remain prominent features of the interior.
The Archdiocese of Alba Iulia is the principal Latin-rite jurisdiction of the Hungarian Catholic community in Romania, and the cathedral continues to host the great solemnities of the Catholic year. Its position within the eighteenth-century star-shaped citadel gives the sanctuary a striking setting, embracing the layered religious and civic history of Transylvania.
History
A diocese was founded here around 1009 under the Hungarian king later canonised as Saint Stephen, and an eleventh-century basilica on this ground was rebuilt in Romanesque and early Gothic form through the thirteenth century after Mongol invaders destroyed the earlier church in 1241. An eighteenth-century Baroque facade, adorned with figures of Hungarian saints, was added to the west front in 1728.
Significance
Beneath its vaults rest the tombs of John Hunyadi, who defended Christian Europe at the 1456 siege of Belgrade, and other rulers of medieval Hungary and Transylvania including Queen Isabella and John Sigismund Zapolya. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the cathedral remains the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia and a place of pilgrimage for the region's Catholic faithful.
