St Patrick's Cathedral
About
St. Patrick's Cathedral rises in the central city of Auckland, New Zealand, and serves as the cathedra of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland. The church takes its dedication from Saint Patrick, the fifth-century apostle of the Irish, whose memory was carried into the Pacific by Catholic missionaries and Irish immigrants in the colonial era.
The cathedral stands as the mother church of Catholicism in the upper North Island, gathering parishes that reach across Auckland, Northland and the surrounding regions. As the diocesan seat, it is the place of episcopal ordinations, the celebration of the chrism Mass during Holy Week and the great solemnities of the Catholic year.
The Catholic faith arrived in New Zealand with the mission of Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier in 1838, and the diocese was canonically established in 1848. The successive cathedrals of Auckland have followed the growth of the city from a small colonial settlement on the Waitematā harbour to one of the major centres of the South Pacific.
Within the cathedral the worship of Christ proceeds in many languages, reflecting the wide communities of the Catholic faithful in Auckland, from Pākehā and Māori to Pasifika, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Latin American and African parishioners. Together they continue beneath the dedication of Saint Patrick the long Irish tradition that has shaped Catholic life in New Zealand from its beginnings.
Significance
St. Patrick's Cathedral of Auckland is the principal Catholic sanctuary of New Zealand's largest city and a focal point for the encounter of Pacific, Asian, Polynesian and European Catholic communities. Its dedication to the apostle of Ireland honours the deep Irish roots of New Zealand Catholicism while welcoming the increasingly multicultural church that gathers beneath its roof today.
