You reach Deoghar the way the town wants you to: slowly, among pilgrims who have carried Ganga water on foot from distant Sultanganj. Ahead rises Baba Dham, where Shiva is called Vaidyanath, the Lord of Physicians, the healer of body and soul. And held within the same Dham is a quieter glory: the Heart Of Maa Sati Rests here.
Of the Fifty-One Shakti Peethas, this Is the seat where the Heart Of Maa Sati Fell. She Is Worshipped here as Maa Jayadurga, and every pilgrim who comes seeking the healer also stands Before The Mother.
The linga here is honoured as Vaidyanath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The Name means the Lord of Physicians: the divine healer to whom devotees turn for wholeness of body and of soul.
Each Sawan, devotees take up Ganga water at Sultanganj and walk the whole way to this shrine. This Shravani Mela is eastern India's largest yearly gathering of pilgrims.
The story carried to Deoghar
When Maa Sati Gave Up Her Body in the fire of Her father's insult, Shiva lifted Her, and grief walked the earth. Vishnu's discus parted Her Body into Fifty-One pieces, and wherever a piece touched the ground, a Shakti Peetha was born. Here, the Deoghar tradition holds, Fell Her Heart, and She Remains as Maa Jayadurga.
The old telling of this shrine adds a second journey: Ravana strove to carry the great linga away to Lanka, and his design broke at this very place, where the linga stayed. So the healer and The Mother dwell in one Dham, and pilgrims bow to Vaidyanath and bow Before Her in a single darshan.

In the month of Sawan the roads to Deoghar fill with devotees who have lifted Ganga water at Sultanganj and vowed to walk every step to the shrine. It is the largest annual gathering of pilgrims in India's east. The water, carried mile after mile, is brought to Vaidyanath the healer: a prayer made visible, poured out at journey's end.
