Maa Aranya Devi Temple

Sheesh Mahal Chowk · Arrah, Bihar, India

The forest is gone; The Lady Of The Forest Remains.

Sheesh Mahal Chowk, Arrah Saraswati & Mahalakshmi Murtis Siddha Pitha of the Puranas New shrine rising since 2022 Presiding Devi Of the city

Say the town's name and you have already spoken Hers: Arrah Is Named For The Goddess Enthroned here. At Sheesh Mahal Chowk the street noise thins into bells and folded hands, and you stand where a forest once stood. The woodland has receded; Maa Aranyani, The Lady Of The Forest, Remains.

One Of the Fifty-One Shakti Peethas: here, the Peetha canon holds, Fell the Right Thigh Of Maa Sati, and the ground has carried Her Presence ever since.
Two Murtis share one sanctum: the larger Honoured as a Form Of Saraswati, the smaller as a Form Of Mahalakshmi, wisdom and abundance seated together In Her Presence.
The presiding Devi Of Arrah: the headquarters town of Bhojpur district takes its very name From Her, and its people call Her their own.

The story the town remembers

When Rama and Lakshmana walked with the sage Vishvamitra toward Janakpur for the Dhanush Yagna, the old accounts say the sage stopped near this place and spoke Of The Glory Of Maa Aranya Devi. The brothers bathed in the Ganga, offered worship To Devi Adishakti, and only then crossed the Sonbhadra river.

In ancient days only an Image Of Adishakti stood here, ringed by forest. The Pandavas, sheltering in Arrah through their exile, worshipped Her; and To Yudhishthira, eldest among them, She Came in a dream, Asking that Her Statue be raised. He installed the Murti Of Maa Aranya Devi at this spot, and the town grew to bear Her Name.

What you'll actually see

1
Two Devis, one Presence
Within the sanctum the larger Murti Is Revered as a Form Of Saraswati and the smaller as a Form Of Mahalakshmi. A devotee bows once and receives learning and abundance together, both Held In The One Adishakti.
2
The test of King Mayurdhwaj
In Dvapara Yuga, the tellings say, Lord Krishna came here with Arjuna to test the charity of King Mayurdhwaj, asking for the flesh of the king's own son to feed his lion. As the king and queen began that terrible obedience, The Goddess Appeared and Gave them Darshan, and the trial was over.
3
A shrine remade for its people
The building raised in 2005 had fallen into poor repair within two decades. By 2022 the old structure was being taken down and a new multi-storey temple was rising over the same sacred ground.

Older than its walls

A Siddha Pitha of the Devi Bhagavata Purana

The building is young, raised in 2005 and already giving way to a taller hall rising over the same ground by 2022. The sanctity is not young at all. The Devi Bhagavata Purana recognises this seat from Satya Yuga To Kali Yuga, a Siddha Pitha counted alongside the 108 Shakti Pithas: worship here has no beginning that anyone remembers.

Construction may change how darshan moves through the complex; confirm the current entrance with the temple office before a festival visit.
