About

The Dodda Gaṇeśana Gudi — literally the 'Great Gaṇeśa Temple' — stands on Bull Temple Road in the Basavanagudi area of south Bengaluru, in the Indian state of Karnataka. It shares its precinct with the neighbouring Dodda Basavana Gudi, the celebrated Bull Temple of Bengaluru, and sits within the park called Bugle Rock, in one of the oldest and most devotional quarters of the city.

At the heart of the temple is a large monolithic mūrti of Lord Gaṇeśa — the elephant-faced deva who is honoured as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. The image is carved from a single stone and is one of the most beloved Gaṇeśa shrines in southern Karnataka, drawing daily devotees who light lamps and offer flowers and modaks.

Devotees gather here especially during Gaṇeśa Caturthī, when the lanes around Bugle Rock fill with kīrtan, processions, and offerings. The temple's setting on the rocky outcrop of Bugle Rock, with its surrounding park of old trees, lends it a quiet sense of place within the modern city.
