About

Jakhu Temple — also rendered Jakhoo Mandir — crowns Jakhu Hill, the loftiest point above Shimla, roughly two and a half kilometres to the east of the city's central Ridge. At an elevation surpassing 2,455 metres above sea level, the temple occupies a commanding position within a dense forest whose resident rhesus macaques have become inseparable from the site's living character.

The presiding deity is Śrī Hanumān, the devoted and mighty servant of Lord Rāma revered throughout the Hindu tradition for his courage, selfless service, and unwavering devotion. A monumental murti — 108 feet in height — was consecrated on the temple grounds on 4 November 2010, its public installation ceremony presided over by the actor Abhishek Bachchan. The statue's construction required an outlay of approximately one and a half crore rupees and has since become a landmark visible from much of the Shimla valley.

The shrine draws an annual congregation during Dussehra, the festival that commemorates Lord Rāma's triumph over Rāvaṇa. Prior to 1972, these celebrations were observed at the Annadale grounds; thereafter, the Jakhu complex became their permanent home. Worshippers may reach the hilltop by foot along a winding forest trail, on horseback, by taxi, or via the Jakhu Ropeway — an aerial gondola developed by Jagson International Limited and inaugurated in 2017, linking a point close to central Shimla directly to the temple precinct.

History

Jakhu Temple is described in tradition as ancient, its origins predating the modern hill-station of Shimla by many centuries. The site's association with Lord Hanumān reflects the wider pattern of Himalayan sacred geography, where elevated peaks and forested ridges have long been regarded as fitting abodes for divine presence. The festival at Jakhu was historically celebrated at Annadale before moving permanently to the temple hill in 1972, anchoring the site more firmly as a centre of communal religious life for the people of Shimla and the surrounding region.

Significance

As the highest consecrated ground in Shimla, Jakhu Temple holds a central place in the devotional life of Himachal Pradesh. Its dedication to Lord Hanumān — the embodiment of strength, bhakti, and tireless seva — gives the site particular resonance for pilgrims who undertake the climb as an act of devotion in itself. The towering Hanumān murti, visible across the valley, serves as a constant reminder of the divine that watches over the city below, while the annual Dussehra observances gather the broader community in shared celebration of dharma's victory over adharma.
