About

The Kal Bhairav temple stands in the ancient city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, one of the seven sacred cities (saptapurī) of Hindu tradition. It is dedicated to Kaal Bhairav (काल भैरव), the wrathful, time-governing manifestation of Lord Shiva who is understood to preside over this holy city as its guardian and lord.

The temple draws a steady stream of devotees who come to seek the blessings of Kaal Bhairav, offering prayers befitting his fierce nature. The entrance to the shrine is flanked by a deepmalika — a row of lamps whose glow lends the approach a contemplative warmth even in daylight. Gray langurs, regarded as sacred animals, move freely around the precincts, and devotees often pause to feed them as an act of reverence.

Ujjain itself is among the holiest cities in India, home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and the site of the Kumbh Mela, and the Kal Bhairav temple is woven into the spiritual fabric of a city that has preserved unbroken traditions of worship across many centuries.
