Jalandhar, Punjab Ancient sacred tank Amarnath cave replica Old Kali Mata Mandir Gold work, sanctum to crown

You come in through the noise of Jalandhar and the city simply stops: a wide sheet of water opens before you, and above it a gold-worked mandir holds the light. Thousands walk this way every year, drawn To Maa Durga and the old talab beside Her house. Beneath all of it lies a deeper claim: this Is Peetha ground.

One of the Fifty-One Shakti Peethas: tradition holds that the Left Breast Of Maa Sati Fell to earth here, and She Is Honoured at this Peetha as Maa Tripuramalini Devi.
At the heart of the complex lies the ancient tank that gives the mandir its name, water long held in deep reverence and counted among the temple's principal draws.
Fine gold work runs through the shrine, laid within the sanctum and across the temple's top, so the whole mandir seems to carry Her light.

The story the water keeps

The old telling begins with grief. When Maa Sati Gave Up Her Body at Her father's yagya out of devotion To Lord Shiva, Shiva carried Her and danced a sorrow that shook the worlds, and Vishnu loosed his chakra so that the Body Of The Goddess Was Parted into Fifty-One pieces. Wherever a piece Came To rest, a Shakti Peetha rose.

At Jalandhar, the tradition says, Her Left Breast Fell, and the Peetha took the Name Tripuramalini. Today the mandir is devoted To Maa Durga, and thousands of pilgrims arrive each year to seek Her Blessing beside the old water.

What you'll actually see

1
A Himalayan cave, close to home
Within the complex stands a model of the Amarnath shrine of Lord Shiva, and the grounds also hold a Vaishno Devi cave. A pilgrim who cannot cross the mountains can still bow before their likeness here, without leaving Punjab.
2
The old Kali Mata Mandir
Next to the main mandir stands an old temple To Maa Kali. Her presence beside Maa Durga deepens the Shakta character of the whole complex: two fierce and loving Faces Of The One Mother, side by side.
3
A complex that serves
The grounds hold more than shrines: a charitable hospital, a food canteen for pilgrims, the community hall called Ram Hall, and the Hari Vallabh Sangeet Sanmelan are all listed within the complex. This is a place of service and gathering as much as worship.

The water that names the temple

The ancient talab

Devi Talab means the tank Of The Goddess, and the water here is no ornament. Devotees hold this ancient tank in great religious reverence, and for many it is the first reason to come. Walk its edge before darshan and watch the mandir's gold repeat in the still surface.

Customs at the water vary; confirm bathing and ritual practice with the temple office on the day you visit.
