Mahabhairav Temple
About
On a rise overlooking the town of Tezpur in Assam stands Mahabhairav Temple, a shrine given over to the worship of Lord Shiva. Tradition holds that King Bana raised the original structure here in stone, and the sanctuary seen today, rebuilt in concrete, carries that same dedication forward into the present.
The temple's fortunes rose considerably under Ahom rule, when successive kings, the Tungkhungia line among them foremost, granted broad tracts of devotee land to sustain its upkeep and installed pujaris and Paiks to tend to daily worship and protection. That royal patronage helped the hillock shrine grow into a center of regional devotion that has endured to the present day.
Worship at Mahabhairav follows rhythms particular to this sacred site. Alongside the many pujas conducted through the year, pigeons are set free at the temple as an act symbolizing the release of ancestral spirits, a gesture that links the living community to those who came before. The shrine's linga itself is spoken of with wonder: local belief holds it to be a living stone, one that has continued to enlarge itself gradually across the years, and some devotees trace King Bana's own prosperity to his worship before it.
History
According to local tradition, King Banasura established the Shiva temple on this hillock, building it first in stone. During the era of Ahom governance, the kings of the Tungkhungia dynasty in particular extended their patronage to the site, endowing it with extensive devotee land and appointing pujaris and Paiks to oversee its rites and safeguard its grounds. The temple standing today was renovated and reconstructed in concrete, though it continues the line of worship begun in that earlier stone sanctuary.
Significance
Mahabhairav Temple holds a central place for followers of the Shaivite branch of Hinduism in the region, most visibly during Maha Shivaratri, when devotees converge on the temple complex from far beyond Tezpur. As part of the festival's rites, laddus infused with bhang, a preparation made from cannabis and blended with milk and spices, are offered to Lord Shiva as prasad. Today a managing committee under the Government of Assam, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur, oversees the temple, a stewardship arrangement that keeps this hilltop sanctuary open and cared for as a living site of pilgrimage.
