Mahalakshmi Temple, Mumbai
About
Set along the shoreline of Mumbai, the Mahalaxmi Temple stands as one of the city's most visited and beloved places of Hindu worship. It is dedicated to Mahalakshmi, who holds a central place among the goddesses celebrated in the Devi Mahatmyam, and devotees from across the city and beyond continue to arrive at its doors seeking her blessing.
Within the sanctum, three sacred images stand together, representing the Tridevi: Mahakali, revered as the goddess who governs time and overcomes demonic forces; Mahalakshmi herself, honoured as the giver of wealth and prosperity; and Mahasaraswati, looked to as the source of learning and knowledge. Together these three forms offer worshippers a single site where the powers of protection, abundance, and wisdom are all held in reverence.
The temple owes its founding to Dhakji Dadaji, a Hindu merchant who lived from 1760 to 1846 and who had it constructed in 1831. His act of devotion gave Mumbai one of its enduring sacred landmarks, a place that has since grown into a fixture of the city's spiritual life and remains woven into the story of Mumbai's history.
History
The temple traces its origins to 1831, when Dhakji Dadaji, a Hindu merchant born in 1760 who lived until 1846, undertook its construction. In the years since, it has grown from a single merchant's offering into one of Mumbai's most recognised and frequently visited temples, drawing worshippers steadily across nearly two centuries.
Significance
Mahalaxmi Temple holds a place of deep affection in Mumbai's religious life, offering devotees the rare opportunity to venerate the Tridevi, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati, together within a single sanctum. As a shrine centred on Mahalakshmi, the principal goddess of the Devi Mahatmyam, it draws seekers of prosperity and blessing, while its long-standing presence on the city's coast has made it an inseparable part of Mumbai's shared spiritual and historical fabric.
