About

Rising above the Krishna River gorge on the Nallamala Hills, the Mallikārjuna Temple at Srisailam holds a singular place in Hindu devotional geography. The presiding deity, Lord Śiva, is worshipped here under the name Mallikārjuna — meaning, in Sanskrit, "the Lord who is white as the jasmine flower" — while the Goddess is venerated as Bhrāmarāmbā. Together they draw pilgrims across the subcontinent who seek the blessing of a site recognized simultaneously as one of the twelve Jyotirliṅgas, the luminous shrines of Śiva scattered across India, and as one of the Śaktipīṭhas, the sacred seats of the Goddess.

The temple complex sits within a landscape of dense teak and bamboo forest, lending the entire precinct a sense of deep withdrawal from the ordinary world. The surrounding hills, known in the Purāṇic literature as Śrīśaila or the auspicious mountain, have long been regarded as among the most potent tīrthas (pilgrimage sites) in South India. Devotees who undertake the journey — historically a weeks-long forest trek, today a road journey into the hills — arrive at a site where Shaiva and Śākta traditions converge, each reinforcing the other's sanctity.

Significance

As one of the twelve Jyotirliṅgas, Mallikārjuna at Srisailam is counted among the most sacred manifestations of Śiva in the Hindu world; the Jyotirlinga tradition holds that visiting such shrines brings the devotee close to the very effulgence of the divine. The temple's simultaneous status as a Śaktipīṭha — a seat of the Goddess — makes Srisailam rare among India's great pilgrimage destinations: a place where the masculine and feminine principles of the cosmos are honored side by side, drawing worshippers from both Shaiva and Śākta lineages in a shared act of reverence.
