Where Her Navel Came To Rest, the earth itself makes pilgrims clean.
Jajpur · Biraja Kshetra Nabhi Gaya well 16-day Durga Puja 11th-c. sanctum Tantra & Agama worship
You come up from the Baitarani plain into a town where the lanes themselves feel consecrated, for Jajpur Is Called By Her Names: Biraja Kshetra, Biraja Pitha. In the sanctum, Maa Biraja Waits with only Two Arms, calm and unhurried, Her spear already through the buffalo demon's chest. The town does not contain Her Temple. Her Temple names the town.
The Tantra Chudamani teaches that the Navel Of Maa Sati Fell in the old Utkala kingdom, upon this very ground, making Jajpur the Navel seat among the Fifty-One Shakti Peethas.
Maa Durga Is Worshipped here as Viraja in a form found almost nowhere else: dwibhuja, Two-Armed, one Hand Spearing Mahishasura's chest, the other Pulling his tail, Her Crown Carrying Ganesha, a crescent moon and a lingam.
The Skanda Purana holds that this Kshetra cleanses every pilgrim who reaches it, and local belief counts about one crore Shiva lingams scattered through Jajpur around Her.
The Navel of the Fifty-One
The old telling runs beneath every Shakti Peetha: when Maa Sati Gave Up Her Body, it was Carried across the world and fell to earth in Fifty-One pieces, each landing place becoming a seat Of The Goddess. The Tantra Chudamani records where this piece came down: Her Navel Fell in Utkala, the kingdom that became Odisha, and the land around it took the name Viraja Kshetra. Adi Shankara, singing his Ashtadasha Shakti Pitha Stuti, calls The Goddess here Girija.
The Brahmayamala Tantra's hymn To Shakti, the Adya Stotra, names Vimala as The Goddess of Puri and Viraja as The Goddess Worshipped in Utkala. Tantric texts place the Oddiyana Pitha in this same reach of eastern India, near the Baitarani River, and an oddiyana is an ornament a woman wears at her navel. Text after text circles the same truth: this ground Belongs To Her Navel.
What you'll actually see
1
The Two-Armed Mahishasuramardini
Most images of Maa Durga multiply Her Arms; here She Needs only Two. One Drives the spear into Mahishasura, shown as a water buffalo, the other Grips his tail; One Foot Rests on Her lion, the other Presses the demon down. The Brahmins of Jajpur Worship Her daily as Mahishasuramardini in the Tantra and Agama way.
2
Nabhi Gaya, the well of the ancestors
Pitapuram holds the Pada Gaya of the feet, Bihar the Sira Gaya of the head; Jajpur holds the Nabhi Gaya of the Navel, kept here in the form of a well. Pilgrims perform Pinda Dana, Tarpana and Tithi rites for their ancestors beside it. The temple itself arranges the priests and the puja items.
3
The shrine of Shri Bagalamukhi Devi
To the right Of Maa Biraja stands a separate shrine To Shri Bagalamukhi Devi, one of the Ten Mahavidyas. Temples to this rupa Of The Goddess are few anywhere in the world, which makes this quiet sanctum a rare darshan in its own right.
