About

The Al-Kāẓimiya Mosque rises in the suburb of Kāẓimiya in northern Baghdad, where it serves as both a congregational masjid and one of the foremost shrines (ḥaram) of Twelver Shia Islam.

Within its walls rest the seventh Imam, Mūsā al-Kāẓim, and his grandson the ninth Imam, Muḥammad al-Jawād — two of the twelve Imams whose lineage is at the heart of Shia devotion. Their tombs draw pilgrims (zuwwār) from across Iraq, Iran, and the wider Shia world, particularly during commemorative gatherings.

The shrine complex also holds the graves of the great Shia scholars Shaykh al-Mufīd and Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, anchoring Kāẓimiya as a place of learning as well as of pilgrimage. Two smaller shrines stand directly adjacent to the mosque, dedicated to the brothers Sayyid al-Raḍī and Sayyid al-Murtaḍā, and to the early jurist Qāḍī Abū Yūsuf al-Anṣārī.

Significance

Among the holiest sites of Twelver Shia Islam, the Al-Kāẓimiya Mosque is a place where pilgrimage, mourning, and scholarly memory converge. The presence of Imams Mūsā al-Kāẓim and Muḥammad al-Jawād, together with the tombs of al-Mufīd and al-Ṭūsī, makes the precinct a living center of Shia devotion and intellectual heritage.
