Angkor Wat
About
Commissioned by Suryavarman II in the early twelfth century, Angkor Wat served as both royal state temple and intended mausoleum for the Khmer king who ruled from 1113 to around 1150 CE. The complex originally bore the Sanskrit name Vrah Viṣṇuloka — meaning "the sacred dwelling of Vishnu" — and was consecrated to that deity from its founding. Its construction spanned roughly three decades, employing millions of sandstone blocks quarried at Mount Kulen, some forty kilometres to the northeast, and transported along canal routes to the building site at Angkor.
The layout embodies a precise cosmological vision: three rectangular galleries ascend in concentric tiers toward a central quincunx of towers, mirroring the five peaks of Mount Meru — the sacred axis shared by Hindu and Buddhist cosmology alike. A broad moat together with an enclosing outer wall marks the symbolic threshold between earthly and divine realms. Unusually among Khmer temples, the monument faces westward; scholars have long associated this orientation with funerary rites and with Vishnu's association with the west. The inner gallery walls carry what one archaeologist called the world's most extensive known arrangement of stone carving in a linear form — epic scenes drawn from the Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata, a royal procession of Suryavarman II, the celebrated Churning of the Sea of Milk featuring ninety-two asuras and eighty-eight devas, and more than 1,796 devatā figures documented across every level of the structure.
From the late thirteenth century, Angkor Wat's character shifted as Theravāda Buddhism became the dominant faith across mainland Southeast Asia. Buddhist iconography replaced many Hindu sculptures, and pilgrims deposited votive Buddha images in the cloister galleries across generations. The monument was never entirely deserted — fourteen seventeenth-century inscriptions record Japanese Buddhist pilgrims living alongside Khmer residents — and this continuity of religious practice is a principal reason for its remarkable preservation. Systematic restoration under the École française d'Extrême-Orient began in 1908; international coordination through UNESCO's ICC-Angkor framework was formalised in 1993, the year following the site's inscription on the World Heritage List.
History
Suryavarman II ordered the construction of this state temple at Yaśodharapura, the Khmer capital, with building beginning around 1122 CE on the counsel of Divākarapaṇḍita; it was substantially complete by 1150, though some bas-relief sections remained unfinished at the king's death. In 1177, invading Cham forces sacked Angkor; the Khmer empire's restoration under Jayavarman VII — who established Angkor Thom as his new capital — introduced a shift toward Buddhist patronage that gradually reshaped the site. By the late thirteenth century the complex had become predominantly Theravāda in character. Portuguese traders encountered the forest-covered ruins in the sixteenth century, and French naturalist Henri Mouhot's account, brought to press posthumously in 1864, brought the temple to wide European attention. The Archaeological Survey of India undertook major conservation work between 1986 and 1992; the World Heritage designation followed in 1992, and ICC-Angkor was established in 1993 to coordinate multinational preservation efforts.
Significance
Angkor Wat occupies a singular position in world religious heritage: born as a Vaishnava sanctuary, it was reinterpreted through Theravāda Buddhist cosmological frameworks without losing the devotional character imprinted at its founding. Its architectural vocabulary — lotus-bud towers, axial galleries, cruciform terraces, and progressively ascending enclosures symbolising the ascent toward divine realms — crystallised what scholars term the Angkor Wat style of classical Khmer architecture, whose influence spread across mainland Southeast Asia. A depiction of the temple has appeared on the Cambodian national flag since 1863, reflecting how deeply this sacred site is woven into national identity. Today it remains a functioning place of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage, receiving more than two and a half million visitors each year.
