Dragon Palace Temple
About
Situated in Kamptee, a town in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, the Dragon Palace Temple stands as a meeting point of devotion across two nations. Known by the alternate name Lotus Temple of Nagpur, it draws Buddhist pilgrims who come to pay respects before a finely carved sandalwood murti enshrining the Buddha's presence.
The temple complex was conceived as more than a place of worship: its founders envisioned it as a living centre for Buddhist study and meditation, where practitioners could deepen their understanding of the Dharma within a setting of quiet contemplation. The grounds, which grew substantially over the years, provide space for both private practice and communal gathering.
The collaboration behind the Dragon Palace Temple reflects an enduring bond between India and Japan, expressed not in diplomacy but in the quiet language of shared faith. The complex carries this spirit of friendship in its very foundations, a reminder that sacred places can serve as bridges between distant peoples united by a common path.
History
The Dragon Palace Temple came into being in 1999 through the combined vision of Sulekha Kumbhare, who held the office of mayor of Kamptee at the time, and Noriko Ogawa, a Japanese businesswoman whose commercial ties had brought her into contact with the region. Ogawa also led the Ogawa Foundation, a charitable trust with a commitment to Buddhist causes, and it was through this institution that the necessary funds were directed toward the project. The two women purchased land together, and on that ground the temple was raised.
The Ogawa Foundation intended the site to embody two purposes simultaneously: a sanctuary for spiritual practice and an enduring symbol of Indo-Japanese goodwill. What began as a ten-acre holding was enlarged considerably in 2003, when a further forty acres were added to the complex, allowing the vision of a broader educational and contemplative campus to take shape.
Significance
For Buddhist practitioners in Maharashtra and beyond, the Dragon Palace Temple occupies a meaningful place as a pilgrimage destination and a living centre of the Dharma. Its sandalwood image of the Buddha draws worshippers who seek both darshan and a space for meditation. The temple also carries a broader cultural resonance as a monument to the long friendship between India and Japan, expressed through shared religious heritage rather than political alliance — an embodiment of the ideal that sacred generosity knows no national boundary.
