Fakr ad-Din Mosque

, Somalia

About

Set within the centuries-old Hamar Weyne district, the Fakhr al-Din Mosque stands among the oldest surviving Islamic foundations on the Somali coast. Its presence anchors the historic urban fabric of Mogadishu, where Arab, Persian, and Bantu Muslim communities have long met along the Indian Ocean trade routes.

The mosque takes its name from Fakhr ad-Din, an early ruler associated with the medieval sultanate of Mogadishu, whose patronage left a lasting imprint on Islamic life along the Banaadir coast. Generations of worshippers have gathered here for the daily prayers, the Friday jumu'ah, and the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Despite the upheavals that have shaped modern Mogadishu, the mosque remains a touchstone of continuity for the local Muslim community, a place where the call to prayer still rises within the lanes of one of the oldest inhabited districts on the East African seaboard.
