Phensang Monastery
About
In the hills north of Gangtok, roughly nine kilometres along the way, stands Phensang Monastery, a house of practice belonging to the Nyingmapa Order, the oldest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Its presence in this corner of Sikkim reflects the long reach of Nyingma teaching across the eastern Himalaya, where monasteries have for centuries served as anchors of prayer, learning, and community life amid the mountains.
The monastery traces its founding to the year 1721, established during the era of Jigme Pawo. Since that founding, Phensang has stood as one of the seats where the Nyingmapa lineage has been kept alive through the generations, offering monks and visitors alike a place set apart from the valley below for practice within the Nyingma tradition.
Today the monastery continues to draw those who wish to encounter Sikkim's Buddhist heritage firsthand, its location north of Gangtok placing it within reach of travelers to the region while retaining the quiet of its hillside setting.
History
Phensang Monastery was established in 1721, during the period associated with Jigme Pawo, placing its founding in the early eighteenth century as part of the broader spread of Nyingmapa institutions through Sikkim.
