Purnagiri Temple
About
Set on a forested ridge overlooking Tanakpur town, Maa Purnagiri Temple is one of Uttarakhand's most beloved Hindu shrines, drawing pilgrims from across Champawat district and far beyond. The sanctuary rests at an elevation of about 910 metres, some 20 kilometres from Tanakpur, and getting there is itself part of the devotion: a road journey to Thulligad gives way to a three kilometre climb up a stone stairway before the temple comes into view.
Tradition holds that this hillside is one of the Shakti Peeths, the scattered places said to mark where portions of the Goddess Sati's body came to rest. After Sati's father Daksha shamed her husband Lord Shiva during a great sacrifice, she gave up her own life in the sacrificial fire. Shiva, consumed by grief and fury, bore her burning form across the cosmos and danced the tandav of destruction, and wherever a part of her fell, a Shakti Peeth arose. At Purnagiri, devotees believe, it was her navel that touched the earth, making the site sacred to the navel-form of the Goddess.
The temple draws its largest crowds during Chaitra Navratri each spring, when thousands climb the hillside path to seek the Goddess's blessing amid views of the surrounding ranges and dense forest. Many pilgrims also make a point of visiting the nearby Sidha Baba Temple after their darshan at Purnagiri, regarding this second visit as necessary to complete the pilgrimage properly. Tanakpur itself is well served by road and rail, with Kathgodam, about 95 kilometres off, serving as the closest major railway station, and a road trip from Delhi taking roughly eight to nine hours.
History
Recent years have brought renewed attention to the temple's upkeep. In November 2024, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami laid the foundation stone for a renovation of the shrine, part of a wider push by the state government to modernize the site. Planned improvements include a smart control room, CCTV monitoring, and a new multi-purpose administrative building intended to help manage the enormous crowds that gather during the annual Purnagiri Mela.
Significance
As one of the recognized Shakti Peeths, Purnagiri holds deep significance within Shakta devotion, understood by worshippers as a place where the divine feminine touched the earth itself in the form of the Goddess Sati's navel. Its remote, elevated setting above Tanakpur, reached only by a demanding climb, lends the pilgrimage a physical dimension that mirrors its spiritual weight, and the site's importance is renewed each year during Chaitra Navratri when the surrounding hills fill with devotees offering prayers and seeking the fulfillment of their wishes.
