Spanish Mosque

Tucked within the historic Paigah Palace complex in Begumpet, Hyderabad, the Spanish Mosque — formally called Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula and also known as the Jam-e-Masjid Aiwan-e-Begumpet — stands apart from virtually every other mosque on the subcontinent. Where most mosques announce themselves through domes and minarets, this house of prayer rises instead with tapered spires that lend the building an unexpected resemblance to a European cathedral, a deliberate echo of its Andalusian inspiration.

The mosque's Moorish Revival style, sometimes described as the style of the Moors, is considered unique in India. Its exterior and interior draw close parallels both to the Cathedral-Mosque of Córdoba in Spain and to the Jama Masjid of Gulbarga in Karnataka, weaving Andalusian grandeur into a distinctly South Asian setting. Inside, the quality of craftsmanship in the ornamental details reflects the ambition and refinement that the Paigah nobility brought to their architectural commissions.

The mosque serves the Secunderabad Muslim community and can welcome up to three thousand worshippers for prayer at any one time. It remains in the care of the heirs of Paigah Amir Sir Viqar-ul-Umra, preserving a living link to the aristocratic lineage that conceived and built it.

History

Construction began in 1900 under the direction of the fifth Paigah Amir, Nawab Mohammed Fazaluddin Khan, known by his titles Iqbal Ud Daula and Sir Viqar-ul-Umra. The Nawab had returned from a visit to Spain deeply moved by the Cathedral-Mosque of Córdoba, and he commissioned this mosque as a tribute to that magnificent Andalusian monument. His death in 1902 meant he did not live to see the project completed; the work was carried forward by his eldest son and successor, Nawab Sultan Ul Mulk Bahadur, the sixth Paigah Amir, through Princess Jahandarunissa Begum, Lady Vicar Ul Umra.

The Spanish Mosque has since been designated a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India, and it is under active consideration for UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit recognition, a reflection of the esteem in which this architecturally exceptional building is held beyond the boundaries of Hyderabad.

Significance

The Spanish Mosque holds a position of distinction among Hyderabad's sacred landmarks, revered as a congregational mosque for the Secunderabad Muslim community and celebrated as an extraordinary instance of cross-cultural architectural exchange. Its deliberate evocation of Moorish Al-Andalus within a South Asian context speaks to the cosmopolitan cultural horizons of the Paigah nobility, one of the foremost aristocratic families of the Nizam's court. The building carries the memory of a medieval Islamic civilisation — its art, learning, and devotional forms — into an Indian landscape, becoming both a place of active daily worship and a living monument to the breadth of the Islamic world.
