Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan occupies a quiet stretch on the western bank of the Suphanburi River in Mueang Suphanburi District, in central Thailand's Suphan Buri Province. The Temple lies along Malai Man Street within Tambon Rua Yai, a setting that has shaped its community ties for generations.

The wat is one of the better-known Buddhist sanctuaries of the province and continues to serve as a meeting place for prayer, merit-making, and traditional ceremonies among the local Thai Buddhist sangha and laity.

Its riverside position has long lent the precinct a contemplative atmosphere, the slow water of the Suphanburi passing close by, while villagers and pilgrims arrive throughout the year to honour the resident Buddha image and to make offerings according to the calendar of Theravada observance.

History

No record names who first raised Wat Pa Lelai or when; the Northern Chronicles record only that a ruler remembered as Phra Chao Kaetae had it restored in B.E. 1724, implying a monastery already old by that year, and local tradition reaches back further still to the Dvaravati period. King Mongkut is said to have visited the Temple during his years as a monk and, after his coronation as Rama IV, to have ordered its restoration as king. The Fine Arts Department registered the compound as an ancient monument in 1935 and has restored the great Buddha image several times since, most recently in 2018.

Significance

Luang Pho To sits in the Pang Pa Lelai posture, hands resting open on both knees rather than folded in meditation, recalling the Buddha's retreat to the forest when the monks of Kosambi fell to quarreling, and the elephant and monkey who came to serve him there. The image is said to hold thirty-six relics of the Buddha within it, and devotees still gather twice a year, in the fifth and twelfth lunar months, to gild it anew. The Temple's grounds also keep faith with Suphan Buri's other great story: a recreated house of Khun Chang and murals from the epic of Khun Chang and Khun Phaen stand near the ordination hall, the Temple having lent its ground to that tale as much as to the Buddha's own.
